Sixty years-ago this month (Aug-2018) a climactic saga began with the opening of the new Air Force Academy campus. The event garnered national press coverage, and even President Eisenhower sent his congratulations to the Cadet Wing. After 3 years of operating in temporary quarters at Lowry AFB, there was certainly an enhanced sense of institutional pride accompanying this opening.
Everything was new, including head Football Coach, Ben Martin, who took the reins of a varsity football program entering its third season (the fourth-classmen of 1955 had played only against other freshman squads). The AF Academy had zero graduates and had not yet played Army or Navy. What was about to unfold in the next four months was unfathomable: The Falcons fought their way to a 10-game undefeated season in 1958 (9-0-1).
As the years have passed, memories of 1958 have faded. So, too, has the legendary ‘Cinderella story’ of that Falcon team. In the attachments below, articles gleaned from newspaper archives provide a remembrance and historic context for that glorious football season. Following are articles about the undefeated Falcons of 1958
